The Asbury Park Historical Society, in collaboration with other individuals and organizations, is planning a series of events to commemorate the plight of the Morro Castle off the shores of Monmouth County, New Jersey on September 8, 1934.
We expect this to be a regional event that will bring to the Jersey Shore tourists, educators, students, historians, curiosity seekers, people interested in the history of Asbury Park and people interested in maritime history.
A marketing campaign commenced on September 8, 2008 with a full media press conference held at the historic Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. This allows a full year to market and promote all of the Morro Castle planned observances. We also expect that the participating organizations will assist in marketing and outreach. At this time we will also put a call out to the public for any related Morro Castle artifacts or memorabilia, or contributions fo the monument.
We encourage anyone and everyone who has documents, images, video or memories of the Morro Castle shipwreck to contact us and share your stories and memorabilia. We look forward to hearing from you!
